A Stargazy Christmas at Lanyon
Jane and family are spending Christmas in Lanyon Manor. All their presenets are now safely underneath the traditional Christmas tree ready for tomorrow and last night for supper they celebrated a 16th century Cornish legend by tucking into a home cooked stargazy pie washed down with a chilled glass of chilled wine. Verdict on the pie yet to come!
The pie is one for fish lovers - a pastry based pie traditionally made with pilchards, eggs and potatoes and is called ‘stargazy’ because it is presented with the pilchards heads poking through the pastry crust - gazing at the stars.
The pie originates from Mousehole a small fishing village in West Cornwall. The legend explains that winter had been very stormy and the fishing boats had been unable to leave the harbour. As Christmas approached, the villagers, who relied on fish as their primary source of food, were facing starvation so on the 23rd December Tom Bawcock braved the weather and seas and returned with enough fish to feed the village.
